Psychiatrist vs Therapist: How to Decide for Kids and Adults

One of the most common questions families and adults ask is whether they should see a therapist or a psychiatrist. The answer depends on your goals, concerns, and where you are in your mental health journey.

Therapy

Therapists focus on emotional support, coping strategies, insight, and skill-building. Therapy is often a wonderful first step for both children and adults.

Psychiatry

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who assess mental health from a medical and developmental perspective. Psychiatry visits may include diagnosis, medical evaluation, and discussion of treatment options, including but not limited to medication.

Medication is never automatic and should always be discussed carefully.

For children and teens

Many families begin with therapy. Psychiatry can be helpful when symptoms persist, when diagnostic questions arise, or when parents want guidance about whether medication may play a role.

For adults

Adults may benefit from therapy, psychiatry, or both. Therapy is often foundational, while psychiatry can add clarity when symptoms affect daily functioning or when treatment questions arise.
